Glossary
The aviation and cyber terms used across the playbooks and screen guides, in one place.
GNSS & navigation
- GNSS
- Global Navigation Satellite System — the umbrella term for GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou.
- Jamming
- Radio noise that denies GNSS. You lose the signal and know it.
- Spoofing
- Fake GNSS that deceives. You get a wrong position you may still believe — more dangerous than jamming.
- RNP corridor
- Required Navigation Performance route segment with tight position-accuracy requirements; GNSS integrity matters most here.
- Alert-before-zone
- Predictive alerting that fires before the aircraft enters a known-risk area, giving time to act.
- NOTAM
- Notice to Air Missions — official notice of conditions affecting a route or airport.
Maintenance & software
- CMB
- Cyber Maintenance Bulletin — same shape as an SB / AD, but for the cyber side of an avionics component. A flight-blocking CMB grounds the tail until applied.
- SBOM
- Software Bill of Materials — the "parts list" of software running on a system.
- CVE
- Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures — the standard CVE-YYYY-N identifier for a known flaw.
- Out-of-cycle patch
- A patch applied outside the normal maintenance window because the risk justifies the cost. Needs CISO approval.
- SB / AD
- Service Bulletin / Airworthiness Directive — the existing mechanisms CMBs sit alongside.
- AOG
- Aircraft On Ground — a tail out of service; easy to miss when tracking cyber exposure.
Security & governance
- Risk acceptance
- A formal, time-bound CISO decision to not act on a known exposure. Never silently close — record it.
- Tabletop
- Discussion-based incident exercise with no live systems — often the cheapest way to find a real gap.
- Customer scope
- The set of customers a user can act on; enforced in the Admin UI.
- EASA Part-IS
- EU information-security regulation for aviation organisations.
- Phase of flight
- Preflight / taxi / takeoff / cruise / descent / approach / landing — changes how time-critical an alert is.
- Tail
- The specific aircraft (registration), not the type.
Systems & surfaces
- EFB
- Electronic Flight Bag — the cockpit tablet/app where pilots get the SkyRay pre-flight briefing.
- OCC
- Operations Control Centre — where dispatchers run the live schedule.
- CTI
- Cyber Threat Intelligence — Overwatch's domain: campaigns, actors and advisories.
